The team go to a subway car to investigate the murder of a newspaper columnist named Conway. Chris looks at the man and sees that he was stabbed multiple times in the heart. At the station, the Gene is asked about his history with Conway. Police chief Harry Woolf tells the team that Conway had a less than ideal relationship with Gene. Harry says that if they mess up the case, the press will never forgive them.

Ray tells Sam that Conway didn't like Gene. They meet with a reporter that worked with Conway. The reporter says that no one liked Conway. She says that Conway went to an art gallery last night. On the TV, Sam sees himself when the reporters asked him about a crime that took place in the future.

Ray and Sam go to the art gallery. Sam realizes that the gallery owner, Tony Crane, was the suspect of the crime that he investigated during his time. Tony asks Sam if they know each other. Sam says that they will someday. Tony says that he saw Conway at the gallery last night. An artist named Eve tells the detectives that she created the exhibition, which consists of a room full of mannequins. Sam imagines a murder victim from a case that he investigated appear behind Eve. Sam tells Tony that he is going to arrest him. Ray pulls him away and tells Sam that they have nothing.

At the station, Ray tells the others that Sam wanted to arrest Tony for no reason. Sam says that he knows Tony. Sam says that Tony will end up running an empire. He says that Tony supports young artists and ends up hurting them. Gene tells Sam that they should build a case.

Later that night, Sam sees a woman on his TV telling him that he promised to help her. Sam meets Eve at her apartment and asks her if she was with Tony the night Conway was murdered. Eve says that she was. Sam tells Eve to leave Tony. Eve says that Tony loves her and believes in her. Eve says that Tony pulled her out of a small town. Sam goes to headquarters and is told that Tony and Eve put a restraining order on him. Sam tells Gene that he thinks that Tony is a bad guy. Gene tells Sam that he can't rely on his hunches. Gene says that his hands are tied because of the press.

Sam tells Annie that Conway wrote a puff piece about Tony. Sam says that in the future Tony's wife went to him and told him that Tony hit her. He says that Tony found out, then killed her. Annie asks Sam if he is talking about the future. Ray arrives and tells Sam and Annie that someone sent hate mail in Greek. Annie sees that Conway wrote a bad review on a Greek restaurant.

The team goes to the restaurant and chase a man named Dimitri. Outside the restaurant, Dimitri wields a knife and tells Sam and Ray that Conway ruined his restaurant. Chris gets around Dimitri and knocks him out with a lamb leg. Gene tells Dimitri that he is under arrest for the murder of Conway.
